Maraya Carmona-Mendoza is the newest member of the Waldorf College women's wrestling team.
Carmona-Mendoza, a native of Watsonville, Calif. and a 2014 Christopher High School graduate, signed a letter of intent with the Warriors on Nov. 24.
"It's good to have Maraya on board," Waldorf coach Tyreece Gilder said. "She will bring a solid level of freestyle and overall wrestling experience to the team."
Carmona-Mendoza is the daughter of Maria Mendoza. She plans to study kinesiology and wellness at Waldorf and said she was impressed with the college's academic and athletic offerings.
A four-year varsity letter winner for the Cougars, Carmona-Mendoza won the 2013 Central Coast Sectional at 120 pounds to qualify for California's state tournament as a junior.
Carmona-Mendoza is currently studying at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif. She will transfer to Waldorf this fall and will be a redshirt freshman when she joins the Warriors.
Becoming the seventh member to sign with Waldorf's 2015-16 recruiting class, Carmona-Mendoza is looking forward to returning to competition on the mat.
"It's amazing to see everything I worked for finally pay off," Carmona-Mendoza said.
