MARION, IOWA – When it comes to the Waldorf University men's golf team, it's the international players who are presently stealing all of the headlines.
Case and point this past weekend, as freshman Manuel Zorrilla Baquero and junior Zabdiel Flores posted the two best scores for the Warriors at the Klocke Family Classic in Marion, Iowa. The Klocke Classic took place from Sept. 9-10.
Zorrilla, who grew up in the Dominican Republic, posted a final score of 155 strokes. Zorrilla's individual score was good enough for 29th place overall. He also posted the best Waldorf overall score for a single round with a 76 for Round 1.
"Even though it's his first year as a collegiate golfer, he's doing quite well on the course," said head coach Mark Clouse after the tournament. "He's playing steady golf and was consistent over both rounds."
Flores, who grew up in Guadalajara, Mexico, finished behind Zorrrilla with a final score of 158 strokes. Flores ended up tied for 41st place.
Clouse was especially impressed with Flores' performance on the second day of the tournament.
"He was even-par for 16 holes and ended up six-over [for the day]. With two triple-bogeys, he still had a pretty good round for us," said Clouse.
The Warriors sent out an "A-Team" and a "B-Team" to Hunters Ridge Golf Course. The "A-Team", which is also known as Waldorf Purple, finished in 14th place for its team score. The "B-Team," which is also known as Waldorf Black, finished in dead last at 16th place.
The "A-Team" consisted of Zorilla, Flores, junior Joe Nordquist, freshman Caden McAnally, and freshman Jared Pheffer. Nordquist posted a 164 score, while McAnally both posted 171 scores. Pheffer drastically improved in Round 2 in comparison to his Round 1 score. Pheffer finished with a 91 on Day 1 and improved by 11 strokes with a final score of 80 for Round 2.
The "B-Team" was the all-freshman squad. Parker Hormuth led Waldorf Black with a final score of 165, which was good enough for him to finish tied for 62nd place. Devin Marek's final score was 169. The three other freshman finished with scores over 170. Cody Ails had 171 strokes on his final tally sheet, with Mitch Anderson and Jack Jurgensen each posting 174 scores.
Waldorf will get a day off before going back to the links for a golf tournament in Mason City. The Warriors will compete in the Trojan Invitational on Sept. 12, which begins at 9:00 a.m. The Warriors will also participate in the Amana Shootout on Sept. 19.
"We have some more practice ahead us as we prepare for two more big tournaments until the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Championships on Sept. 25-26," said Clouse.
