FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Waldorf University men's golf team held off the Iowa Wesleyan University Tigers by winning 49.5-40.5 in a Saturday afternoon match play event at Bear Creek Golf Course.
"The Purple Cup is one of our favorite events of the fall season," Waldorf coach Mark Clouse said. "We have great camaraderie with the Iowa Wesleyan team and look forward to the friendly competition.
"As a Ryder Cup-style competition, it gives the players the chance to experience a match-play style event," Clouse added about the day.
Iowa Wesleyan just couldn't compete with Waldorf, even after Warriors assistant coach Cody Stovall joined the Tigers for the friendly match-play event.
Stovall teamed up with Kurt Moon to post 10.5 points at Bear Creek.
The pairing of Zabdiel Flores and Cody Ails posted nine points at Bear Creek, Manuel Zorrilla Baquero and Mitch Anderson posted eight points, and Parker Hormuth and Caden McAnally registered 7.5 points.
"Most of the matches were very close and could have gone either way," Waldorf's coach said. "I was pleased to see the Waldorf Warrior men come away with the victory and retain the Cup."
The Warriors continue their fall season with the Waldorf Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Bear Creek.
