The Spotlight Athlete of the Week is Michael Keeran.
Keeran posted a .467 batting average and a .600 slugging percentage for the Waldorf University baseball team during last weekend’s North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Tournament at Valley City, N.D. He went 7-for-15 at the plate with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored while also picking up a win on the mound.
Keeran led the Warriors (19-37), going 3-for-5 with a pair of run-scoring singles in a 14-5 loss to Mayville State University (44-10) during Friday’s NSAA Tournament opener. The Comets are ranked No. 22 in the latest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) poll.
On Saturday, Keeran helped Waldorf keep its season alive in the conference tournament with a 5-4 victory over Viterbo University (12-36) during an elimination game. Keeran (6-8) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and didn’t give up a hit while notching the win. He struck out two batters, contributed a single and a stolen base.
Keeran finished 3-for-5 with a triple during Saturday’s 9-3 loss to Mayville State, which brought the season to a close for the Warriors. Waldorf held a 3-0 lead after one inning. The Comets tied the game in the fifth and pulled away with a five-run eighth.
Keeran capped the season with all-conference honorable mention recognition. The senior left fielder and pitcher from Clear Lake led the Warriors with 60 hits while sporting a .330 batting average, a .407 slugging percentage and a .470 on-base percentage. Keeran cranked out 10 doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs. He scored a team-high 50 runs and also led Waldorf with 24 steals in 29 attempts. On the mound, Keeran led the team in wins and notched 47 strikeouts. Defensively, he put together a strong season with a .976 fielding percentage, accounting for 63 putouts and 17 assists. Keeran is set to compete for the Ozark Generals in the MINK League this summer.
