Kendrick Clay arrives at Waldorf from Hastings College where he served as the Head Coach for track and field and cross country. During his ten plus years at Hastings, Clay more than doubled the size of the programs, coached over 200 National Qualifiers, 105 NAIA All-American performances, and 12 Individual National Champions while assisting his student athletes to produce 40 new school records.
As the success of Clay’s teams suggest, he is a strong program leader and sees as his priority developing not only accomplished runners but well-rounded individuals and quality student athletes. “Running track, running cross country is important,” he said, “but being a good citizen and person is also key to a great experience.” While at Hastings, Clay’s philosophy produced 22 top 20 NAIA National Meet team finishes and 7 top 10 National Meet team finishes.
Coach Clay’s first priority will be to recruit and develop runners at Waldorf, and his experience at Hastings, where he engineered the emergence of the cross country and track teams, will help kick start the College’s teams. Bart Gray, Waldorf’s Athletic Director, said of Clay, “He is known and respected in the track and field/cross country community throughout the Midwest and the NAIA. Kendrick will bring instant credibility to our new program and provide experienced leadership.”
“He is extremely knowledgeable in all event areas and has a strong biomechanical background,” Gray continued. “In addition, he has the experience of organizing and hosting quality large meets for both track and cross country,” which will allow the program at Waldorf to move seamlessly into competitions at the highest level.
Coach Clay brings a wealth of experience and energy to the already revitalized and impressive athletics offerings at Waldorf, and the addition of Track and Field to the array of Waldorf Athletics will continue the College’s ascent. “Our entire athletic department will benefit from Kendrick’s experience and leadership skills,” Gray concluded, “We are very fortunate to be able to hire a coach of Kendrick’s caliber. He brings with him an impressive coaching resume,” and the students who come to train and run with Mr. Clay will enjoy a great experience on the track and in the classroom.
