[Women's Wrestling] Jones Qualifies for World Team Trials

Three Warriors traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete at the Asics U.S. Open over the weekend. Senior, Tamika Jones sought to wrap up her collegiate career on a high note, seeking a bid to World Team Trials. In January, Jones received All-American recognition after placing at WCWA Nationals. Jones' first match at 48 kg was against Bernara Moore. She was defeated by decision 7-1, 5-1 to enter the consolation bracket. After a bye, Jones entered a tough fought match with fellow teammate, Lilian Salinas. Jones took the 2-0, 2-0 decision. She then faced Oklahoma City University's Emily Webster, who handed Jones a technical fall. From there, Jones took on Allene Somera in the seventh place match. Jones emerged victorious with a 5-0, 0-1, 6-1 decision. Her seventh place finish secured her a spot at World Team Trials.

Director of Athletics, Michael Scarano has announced Courtney Martell as the next Head Women's Wrestling Coach at Waldorf College. For the past two seasons, Martell has served as an Assistant Coach for the women's wrestling team at Midland University.

The Warriors trekked to Bristol, Tennessee for the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association National tournament. Tamika Jones (Sr-Columbia, SC) represented the Warriors at 101 pounds. Following an opening round bye, Jones pinned Missouri Valley's Vuong in just :40 seconds to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Jones drew tough matchup against Oklahoma City's Webster and fell by pin (6-0, 0:27).

The women's wrestling team trekked to Springfield, Illinois for NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals over the weekend. The Warriors received a tough draw in the opening round, squaring-off with top-ranked Oklahoma City University. Despite wrestling confidently against the Stars, the Warriors were only able to take one match. Dana Karkar (Jr-Willits, CA) took down Logan Rich 1-4, 4-0, 3-0. Waldorf fell by a final of 41-3.

On Saturday the Waldorf women's wrestling team returned to the mat for their first competition of 2013. The Warriors played host to seven of the top ten collegiate wrestling teams in the nation, which spelled a tough road to finals bracket.

Senior, Tamika Jones (Columbia, SC) picked up Waldorf's first three points with her 3-2, 3-0 victory over Gem Palencia at 101 pounds. The Warriors fourth and final point came from Dana Karkar (Jr-Willits, CA) in her 1-0, 4-1 loss to Alicia Hubbard.

Last season, the Warriors traveled from coast-to-coast to compete against the best wrestlers in the country. Early into the 2012-13 season, the experience has been paying dividends. In the first three weeks of their competition schedule the Warriors have had solid showings, and this weekend was no different.

Head Women's Wrestling Coach Dustin Baynes has been selected to attend the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Coaching Leadership Academy. Baynes received a full scholarship to attend the academy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 1 and 2^nd. He is one of forty-five coaches from all collegiate divisions to be selected.

The journey of Waldorf College's Jessica Fresh continues to the wrestling mats of Guatemala this summer. The Knoxville, Iowa-native has accumulated many accolades in just her first year as a member of the women's wrestling team. She has earned All-American status and qualified to compete at the Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City this spring.

[Women's Wrestling] Warriors Fall to Top-Ranked OCU

The Waldorf women's wrestling team hosted #1 Oklahoma City University Friday night in the Hanson Fieldhouse. The Warriors battled in the night's six matches, but Oklahoma City won the dual 22-7.
