The Waldorf men's wrestling team is setting its sights on a strong finish in Saturday's National Association of Intercollege Athletics (NAIA) Northern Qualifier at Mitchell, S.D.
"I expect the team to wrestle from start to finish, through every position," Waldorf coach Brad Stockton said. "If the individuals take care of themselves, the team will come together. If they wrestle this weekend like they have been this semester, it will be an exciting day."
ORANGE CITY – The Waldorf College men's wrestling team wrapped up the regular season, splitting a pair of dual meets with York College and Northwestern College on Wednesday.
York College entered the night ranked No. 11 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) poll, but the Panthers were no match for the Warriors as Waldorf scored a 37-6 victory.
The Warriors drew NCAA Division II, Upper Iowa University for their first dual of the season. Seventh-ranked, Bo Bettinson got the night started with a decisive 7-2 decision over Lincoln Monroe at 125 pounds. Ray McQueen followed suit, taking down Tanner Schmidt 7-1. At 141 pounds Dillon Spates earned a 7-4 decision over Duane Richardson.
Under the direction of first year head coach, Brad Stockton, the men's wrestling squad opened their season at the Kaye Young Open hosted by NIACC. From top to bottom, the Warriors showed they are ready for the season.
In the first NAIA and regional rankings of the season, the Waldorf wrestling program has landed their top two on both preseason lists.
