Wade's three conference titles highlight men's effort at NSAAs
MADISON, S.D. - Senior Wade Baker put together a memorable performance at the NSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with three titles at the two-day event held at Dakota State University.
Baker set a new conference meet record in the shot put with a heave of 17.03 meters. He set a new Waldorf record of 57.24 meters in winning the hammer throw. He also placed first in the discus throw with a toss of 46.92 meters. For his performance at the meet and throughout the season, Baker was named NSAA Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Waldorf came in fourth place in the team competition. Dakota State easily won the team crown with Dickinson State placing second.
Jorge Olivo-Cabrera gave Waldorf another conference championship. His time of 57.43 seconds bested the field in the 400-meter hurdles. He also had a good showing in the 110-meter hurdles with a third-place time of 14.88.
Xzayvier Horton had a stellar two days on the track for Waldorf, placing high in three individual events. In the 100-meter dash, Horton came in third place with a time of 10.92 seconds; it's a time that places him second all-time in Waldorf history. He had a second-place showing in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.95. He also came in fifth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.90.
Other sprinters had great meets. Robert Beal's time of 11.25 in the 100-meter dash now places him third in school history. Javontay Harper's time of 11.28 in the 100 is now fifth all-time at Waldorf. Robay Birri's time of 11.42 in the same event is now ninth in school history. Brunelson Dominique's time of 23.01 in the 200-meter dash is now fifth all-time at Waldorf. The quartet of Beal, Olivo-Cabrera, Birri, and Horton had a runner-up showing in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 43.92.
Marquis Simpson had a good showing in the jumps. His distance of 6.58 meters in the long jump got him fourth place in the meet and puts him seventh all-time at Waldorf. He also placed sixth in the high jump with a height of 1.82 meters. Marcel Smith was just ahead of him in the event with a fifth-place showing of 1.87 meters.
Nolan Reynolds had a decent showing as well. He placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 42.66 meters. He also placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.16 and placed fifth in the decathlon.
Baker and Olivo-Cabrera will be representing Waldorf at the NAIA Outdoor Nationals May 22-24 in Marion, Indiana.
