Waldorf Baseball Uses Quality Start and Four-Run Seventh to Propel to Win vs Viterbo
FOREST CITY, Iowa. Waldorf broke open a close game with a four-run bottom of the seventh and went on to beat Viterbo 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon in Forest City, Iowa. After Viterbo trimmed the deficit to one run in the top half of the inning, the Warriors answered immediately, turning the game on a string of run-scoring at-bats that restored control.
The decisive stretch came after Hunter Hess lined a two-run single in the top of the seventh to cut Waldorf's lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Zane Silos-Holmes brought in a run on a fielder's choice, then Tyler Tamez, Dylan Battye and Randy Martinez each followed with RBI singles as the Warriors pushed the lead to 7-2. Waldorf added two more runs in the eighth when Tamez doubled in a pair.
Waldorf scored first in the third inning when Jack Kamalski delivered an RBI single that plated Mason Smith. The Warriors added on in the fourth when Battye hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0. That early support was more than enough for starter Ben Dornseif, who kept Viterbo quiet through six scoreless innings.
Dornseif earned the win after allowing just two hits over 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and no walks on 81 pitches. Waldorf's staff held Viterbo to five hits overall. Viterbo left eight runners on base and did not score until the seventh inning.
At the plate, Battye finished 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Tamez went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Waldorf totaled nine runs on nine hits, drew three walks and was hit by six pitches. The Warriors also took advantage of extra traffic throughout the game, even while leaving 10 runners on base.
Viterbo finished with two runs on five hits and two errors, while Waldorf also committed two errors. Hess accounted for both Viterbo RBIs. But once the Warriors answered the seventh-inning threat with four runs of their own, the game quickly shifted for good, and Tamez's two-run double in the eighth provided the final margin.
