Hockey - Warriors Defeat Huskies at Home 7-1
The Waldorf hockey team returned to their home ice for a conference weekend series against Northern Illinois University. The Warriors won 7-1. With this win, the Warriors now have the most wins in a season since the 2016-2017 season.
The Warriors started off strong early with Tyler Nelson (SO/Pleasanton, CA) scoring the first goal, assisted by Jake Lindblom (JR/Pine City, MN) and Michael Heitkamp (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) in the first four minutes of the game.
Wade Auger (SR/Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan) kept the momentum in the first period by finding the back of the net to make the score 2-0. Nelson was credited with the assist.
"We played a strong gritty game tonight," stated Associate Head Coach Ty Prater. "It was nice to see that our goal production was spread out amongst the team."
The third goal for the Warriors came almost halfway through the second period. Auger scored on a power-play against the Huskies, assisted by Morgan Sweeney (JR/Hastings, MN).
Just 17 seconds later, Jacob Sundgren (SO/Pinedale, WY) scored the next goal for the Warriors. Tristian Klewsaat (SR/Larkspur, CO) and Chayse Haberman (JR/Minot, ND) on the assists.
Nelson scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Campbell Jackson (JR/Hermosa Beach, CA) to go up 5-0.
The Huskies scored their only goal on a power-play against the Warriors.
Zak Jimenez (SR/Mason City, IA) closed out the second period with the sixth goal for the Warriors, assisted by Klewsaat and Nelson.
"We had a great crowd tonight – the guys loved all the support and provided an entertaining game for them. The win was capped off with a strong performance in net from Nelson Schiiler," Prater said.
For the third period, Lindblom scored the only goal on a power-play against the Huskies, assisted by Jeremiah Lebsack (SO/Duluth, MN) and Heitkamp. The Warriors won 7-1.
Goaltender Nelson Schiiler (JR/Strathmore, Alberta) finished the game with 35 saves.
The Warriors will play the Huskies tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11th in Albert Lea. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
