NAIA Men's Wrestling Championship

PARK CITY, Kan. – Waldorf University's lone qualifier, 125-pounder Malachi Aispuro, capped a strong season with a gritty opening day showing at the NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championships on Thursday, proving he belongs among the nation's best in his weight class.

Competing as a national at-large selection, Aispuro opened his tournament against Indiana Tech's Tyler Hisley and immediately demonstrated that the stage was not too big. In a back-and-forth bout that went the distance, Aispuro came up just short in a 9-7 decision. The narrow loss underscored both the razor-thin margins at the national level and Aispuro's ability to trade attacks and counters with a highly regarded opponent.

The close defeat dropped Aispuro to the consolation side, where he responded with one of his most complete efforts of the season. Facing Julio Gonzalez of Arizona Christian, Aispuro controlled pace and position, turning early pressure into sustained momentum. He finished the match with a 10-3 decision, using clean finishes and solid mat awareness to limit Gonzalez's scoring chances and pile up points of his own. The victory advanced Aispuro into the second session and kept Waldorf represented deep into the day's action.

Riding that confidence into the evening, Aispuro then drew Justin Rodriguez of Cleary University in his next consolation bout. The match remained tight throughout, with Rodriguez holding a slim 4-2 edge heading into the third period. Aispuro continued to push the pace in the final two minutes, forcing the action in search of a breakthrough score. However, Rodriguez's riding time ultimately proved decisive, adding a point to close out a 5-2 decision and end Aispuro's tournament run.

Though Aispuro finished the day 1-2, his performance at 125 pounds reflected the progress of both the wrestler and the Waldorf program.For Waldorf, Aispuro's national appearance and his ability to battle through three full matches on the championship stage provided a strong close to the season and a foundation on which to build. The effort signaled that the Warriors' men's wrestling program is trending upward, with expectations that Thursday's experience will translate into deeper runs and additional qualifiers in future NAIA national tournaments.
