Hendricks, Hernandez, & Bamba Place at Waldorf Open
FOREST CITY, IA – The Waldorf women's wrestling team hosted the Waldorf Open on Saturday. The Warriors saw three top placed finishes in Jojo Hendricks at 1st, Xena Hernandez finished 3rd, and Shianna Bamba took 5th.
"Great effort today. Tons of fight out of the ladies," stated head Coach Tyreece Gilder. "They fought through some adverstiy and stepped up the challenges that they were presented with."
191 Bracket: Jojo Hendricks (SR/Beaumont, CA) defeated Tylah Allen of Missouri Valley in her first dual by fall at 0:30. In the second round, Hendricks won by fall at 1:29 over Kali Butts of Grand View. The semi-final dual, Hendricks faced Jannell Avila from Baker University and won by fall, 2:54.
The championship matchup consisted of Hendricks and Olivia Brown of Grand View. Hendricks took the win with a 6-0 decision.
235 Bracket: Xena Hernandez (SO/Pacoima, CA) was defeated in the first round by Kaira Boldridge of Southeast Community College by fall, 2:00. Hernandez bounced back to then go undefeated. Hernandez won by fall, 0:51 in her next dual over Savannah Koch of Southeast Community College. In the next bout, Hernandez won over Madi Hargett of Baker University by fall, 0:49.
In the match for 3rd place, Hernandez defeated Breanna Salgado from Iowa Western Community College by fall, 0:34.
143 Bracket: Shianna Bamba (FR/Peoria, AZ) won her first dual against Ameila Coykendall of York University by fall, 1:26. In the next dual, Bamba defeated Celeste Cubillo from Iowa Western Community College by fall, 2:36. In the quarterfinals, Samba was defeated by Madison Diaz of Grand View by technical fall, 11-1.
In the dual for 5th place, Samba won by fall, 0:46 over Ashleigh Denny from William Penn.
Gilder added, "Not all the matches went our way, but their effort and hustle was turned all the way up. That's what we need to keep getting better. We can work with that."
Next up for the women's wrestling tournament, the Warriors will compete at the Connor/Oppenheim Open on Saturday, December 2nd starting at 9 am.
