Waldorf Wrestlers Compete in the Grand View Open
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Warriors traveled to Grand View University for the Grand View Open. Sixteen wrestlers competed in eight of the weight classes.
Mackenzie Gilbert, Rosa Ramirez, and Alanis Serrano-Rios wrestled in the 103-weight class. Gilbert fell in 0:38 in her first match, received a bye for her second, and lost in a tech fall (13-2) for her last. Ramirez finished 2-2. She fell in 2:30 in her first match but won her next two in a fall in 0:35 and tech fall (10-0), respectively. She lost her last match in a tech fall (15-4). In Serrano-Rios' matches, she lost with a tech fall (11-0), received a bye, and then lost in another tech fall (10-0).
The lone wrestler for 110 was Edyn Hartman. After receiving a bye, she lost two matches in a fall, the first in 1:05 and the second in 0:29.
Lila Sheehan wrestled at 117 and finished 2-2 on the day. She won her first match in a tech fall (10-0) and lost her second in a tech fall (11-0). She came back to win her third round in a 6-0 decision and fell in 5:31 in her last match. The second Warrior at 117 was Ashley Gonzalez Escalante, who fell in 0:11, received a bye, and then lost in a tech fall (13-2).
At 124, Abigail Atibagos fell in 1:56, received a bye, and lost in her last match by a tech fall (10-0).
Four Warriors wrestled at 131. Neve Barragan lost her two matches in tech falls (11-0 and 13-2). Ari Hen went 1-2, winning her first round with a tech fall (10-0) and losing her last two in tech falls (10-0 and 11-1). Izzy Urban fell in 0:29 in her first match, received a bye, and lost with a tech fall (12-2). Last for the weight class, Nicole Martens lost in a tech fall (11-0), received a bye, and lost in another tech fall (10-0).
For the 138-weight class, Emily Hibner lost two matches in tech falls (11-1 and 10-0).
Laura Merino and Missy Araujo competed in the 160-weight class. Merino fell in two matches, her first in 1:45 and her second in 0:50. Araujo won in her first round in an 11-5 decision. She lost her next two in falls in 2:33 and 1:53.
At 207, Skyler Bruno received a bye for her first and third rounds. In her second and fourth matches, she fell in 0:56 and lost in a 4-0 decision. Olivia Burciaga also wrestled in the 207-weight class. She also received a bye for her first and third rounds and tech falls (11-0 and 10-0) in her second and fourth rounds.
The Warriors travel to Crete, Nebraska next weekend for the GPAC Duals, where they will face Midland University, Hastings College, and Doane University.
