Waldorf Men's Basketball Fall Victim to Hot Shooting by Morningside in Conference Loss
FOREST CITY, Iowa. Morningside used a dominant shooting night and a decisive first-half surge to hand Waldorf a 96-78 loss on Wednesday night in Forest City, Iowa. The Warriors trailed 48-30 at halftime and were unable to erase the deficit as Morningside shot 57.6 percent from the field and controlled the glass in the GPAC matchup.
Waldorf opened with energy behind Krys Watley, who buried a 3-pointer on the game's first possession to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. The teams traded baskets through the early minutes, but Morningside's transition offense began to tilt the game. A fastbreak layup by Kaden Van Regenmorter off a steal pushed the visitors in front 12-9 and sparked a sustained first-half run.
From there, Morningside's efficiency and rebounding created separation. The Mustangs repeatedly converted on inside-out possessions and second-chance looks, turning a single-possession game into a double-digit margin. A 3-pointer by Daniel Brocaille extended the lead to 43-26 late in the first half, and Van Regenmorter's layup at the buzzer sent Waldorf into the locker room facing an 18-point deficit at 48-30.
Morningside carried that momentum into the second half, scoring on its opening trip when Caleb Dreckman completed a three-point play to make it 51-30. Each time the Warriors pieced together a mini-run, the Mustangs answered from the perimeter. Dreckman drilled a 3-pointer to push the advantage to 71-55, and moments later Alex Wilcoxson connected from deep for a 74-57 cushion that effectively put the game out of reach.
Waldorf continued to battle, matching Morningside with 48 second-half points and finding more rhythm offensively. Watley paced the Warriors with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including three 3-pointers, while adding seven rebounds and three steals as he pressured passing lanes on the perimeter. Conner Aldridge added 17 points and a block, attacking the lane and providing interior scoring to help Waldorf keep the margin from growing further in the final minutes.
Ultimately, the difference came on the boards and in shot-making. Morningside finished with a 42-24 rebounding advantage and assisted on 20 of its 38 field goals, turning strong ball movement into high-percentage looks. Wilcoxson led all scorers with 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting, hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, while Dreckman added 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Fitzy Grant chipped in 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, part of a 10-for-22 team performance from 3-point range.
Waldorf closed the night shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point distance (12-for-36), showing offensive depth but struggling to overcome Morningside's efficiency and rebounding edge. This loss put the Warriors at 5-17 for the season, with a 1-13 record in conference play.
