Waldorf Men's Basketball Stalls Offensively in Loss vs. Doane
FOREST CITY, Iowa — A decisive second half surge and relentless defensive pressure from Doane (Neb.) sent Waldorf to a 95-67 defeat on Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors struggled to keep pace after the break in GPAC men's basketball action.
Trailing 45-33 at halftime, Waldorf was still within striking distance before Doane opened the second half with a layup from Jack Wilson and a fastbreak basket from Trevon Beckman to quickly push the margin to 16. That early second half burst set the tone for the rest of the game, as Doane continued to convert at a high rate and force turnovers, outscoring the Warriors 50-34 over the final 20 minutes to pull away.
The Warriors showed energy early, responding to an opening 3-pointer from Doane's Casen Chaney with a strong stretch that produced a 14-7 advantage, capped by a Nick Graves 3-pointer off a feed from Krys Watley at the 14:11 mark of the first quarter. Waldorf moved the ball well during that span and knocked down shots from the perimeter to build its largest lead of the afternoon. But Doane answered with a run of its own, highlighted by a Jonan Claussen 3-pointer with 10:40 left in the half that gave the visitors a 20-19 edge they would not relinquish.
From there, Doane's efficiency and pressure began to tilt the game. The Tigers closed the first half on a push that included a late layup from Aadam Coulibaly in the final minute to make it 45-30 before Waldorf trimmed three points off the margin going into the locker room. Doane finished the game shooting 56.5 percent from the field (35-of-62), including 44.4 percent from 3-point range, and turned 15 steals into repeated transition opportunities while committing just nine turnovers.
Waldorf battled on the glass and moved the ball offensively, finishing with 29 rebounds and 17 assists, but 19 turnovers proved costly against an opponent that consistently converted miscues into points. The Warriors shot 45.6 percent from the floor (26-of-57) but were limited to 29.6 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-27) and 58.3 percent at the free-throw line (7-of-12), making it difficult to match Doane's offensive pace.
Individually, Conner Aldridge led Waldorf with 19 points, adding five rebounds and two assists while connecting on 7-of-14 attempts from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range in 27 minutes. Graves provided another solid scoring option with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists on 5-of-10 shooting. Their production helped keep the Warriors competitive through stretches of both halves, particularly during the early run that gave Waldorf an initial cushion.
Doane's balanced attack ultimately proved too much. Beckman powered the Tigers with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds and three steals on 8-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from long range and 6-of-7 at the line. Chaney added 15 points, six assists and a game-best seven steals while hitting a pair of 3-pointers, and Justus Gardiner chipped in 14 points on an efficient 5-of-7 from the floor. Doane also held a slight 33-29 edge on the boards and controlled the tempo for much of the second half.
Waldorf will look to build on the positive stretches from the opening quarter and the play of Aldridge and Graves as it turns its attention back to conference play. With only two games remaining this season, the Warriors sit at 6-20 overall, with a 2-16 mark in conference play.
