Waldorf Men's Hockey Cannot Salvage Series Against (11)University of Mary
Mandan, N.D. — Waldorf University ran into a relentless University of Mary attack Saturday night, falling 6-1 in nonconference hockey action despite a standout 40-save performance from goaltender Matt Tworkowski.
The University of Mary set the tone early, breaking through in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The hosts then put the game out of reach with a decisive second period, scoring four times to create a gap Waldorf could not close. The Warriors answered with their lone goal of the night in that middle frame, but the offensive surge from the Marauders proved too much over the full 60 minutes.
Tworkowski was the clear bright spot for Waldorf, facing sustained pressure and heavy shot volume throughout the game. Finishing with 40 saves, he backstopped the Warriors through extended stretches in the defensive zone and helped limit further damage, particularly in a tighter third period that saw each side manage just one goal.
Offensively, Waldorf broke through in the second period, capitalizing on one of its quality chances to get on the board. The goal briefly shifted momentum as the Warriors pushed to cut into the deficit, but University of Mary continued to convert its opportunities and carried a multi-goal advantage into the final period.
In the third period, Waldorf tightened its structure and generated more resistance in its own zone, with Tworkowski continuing to turn aside chances. However, the Marauders added one final goal to close out the scoring and seal the 6-1 result.
Despite the loss, the Warriors' effort in net and stretches of competitive play in the second and third periods provide key takeaways as the team looks ahead. With Tworkowski anchoring the back end and the group showing resilience late, Waldorf will aim to build on the positives while addressing defensive-zone coverage and finishing on the offensive end in upcoming contests.
