Warriors Softball Comes up Short in Opening Day
AUSTIN, Minn. – The Warriors started the softball season indoors Saturday. Waldorf University was edged, 3-2, opening the day against Mount Mercy, before Clarke University rode a 3-run first for a 4-1 win in the late contest.
Following a two-run Mustang home run in the home first, the Warriors pushed across a pair in the top of the second to tie it at 2-2. Mount Mercy took the lead in the bottom of the second with a single run and it held up or the final five frames and 3-2 final.
Clarke plated three runs off three hits in the top of the first inning of the late contest. Brooke Hickey provided the offense with a solo home run in the home first to make it 3-1. The Pride added a run in the second for a 4-1 lead and the Warriors were only able to get a Kaela Eslinger leadoff single in the fourth inning and a one-out hit from Gabby Bierly in the fifth the rest of the way.
Waldorf produced five hits in the two combined contests. Along with the Hickey homer, Bierly, Eslinger, Timber Oakes and Mckenna Mentink singled one time apiece.
Waldorf will have to wait until next Friday (Feb. 23) to try again for its first victory when it faces Morningside (12 p.m.) and Dordt (4 p.m.) in single games at the Sioux Center.
