Women's Basketball Wins in Double Overtime Over Mustangs 84-78
FOREST CITY, IA – In an electric atmosphere and exciting game, the Waldorf women's basketball team won in double overtime, 84-78, over the Mount Mercy Mustangs on Saturday evening.
"Incredible heart and soul displayed by our girls tonight! Never say die attitude comes from a deeper desired to play for each other," stated Head Coach Shawn Chaffin. "We are pretty banged up, but we got a lot of contributions from everyone."
1st: The Warriors got off to a strong start by going on an 8-0 run, with points by Edosa Ogbemudia (SO/East Bethel), Lizzie Garza (SR/Brownsville, TX), and Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA). A three pointer from Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) extended the lead to 17-9. The Warriors were up 20-11 at the end of the quarter.
2nd: Alyah Abrahamson (SO/Browersville, MN) opened the quarter with a three. Garza was fouled on a made shot and sunk her free throw for a three-point play. The Mustangs brought the game within six. Abrahamson forced a Mustang turnover with a steal and Garza made a layup. The Warriors were up 30-20 with just under 5 minutes remaining. Dial went 2-2 from the free throw line. The Mustangs drained a three with 13 seconds left and Garza closed out the half with a las second layup. The Warriors kept their lead 36-25.
3rd: Two made free throws from Garza and a three-pointer from Dial gave the Warriors a 43-31 lead. The Mustangs started to make more shots, but the Warriors maintained their lead. Lindsay Field added two points and Dial added a three-point play. The Mustangs closed out the quarter with three made three-pointers in the last minute. Waldorf was up by three, 50-47.
4th: The Mustangs took the lead after back-to-back layups. Barry and Sandra Christian (SR/Gainesville, TX) both drained threes and the Mustangs responded with one of their own. Field forced a turnover with a steal that resulted in a three from Abrahamson. With 2:24 left in regulation, Ogbemudia grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up for two points. The Mustangs tied the game at 65 with two made free throws to force overtime.
1OT: The Mustangs started overtime with a 5-0 run against the Warriors. With being down by four with 25 seconds left, Dial gets fouled and sinks two free throws. Mount Mercy made one free throw to go up 73-70 with 10 seconds remaining. The Warriors called a timeout and advanced the ball past half court. Christian drained a three to tie the game and force a second overtime.
2OT: Ogbemudia and Barry made back-to-back layups. The Mustangs brought the game within one point with 1:35 left. After a clutch defensive rebound and layup made by Ogbemudia, the Warriors were up by three. Field and Christian each went 2-2 from the free throw line to secure the win, 84-78.
Chaffin added, "I love this team. Our home crowd was amazing this weekend! 2 overtime games with one going double overtime, and our crowd was loud both times."
The Warriors had five athletes in double-digit points, with two double-doubles. Dial finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Garza had 20 points with 10 rebounds. Ogbemudia added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Barry and Christian each tallied 10 points, Barry added 5 assists. The Warriors shot 79.2% from the free throw line with Garza going 8-9 and Dial 5-5. Waldorf had 28 points contributed from the bench.
The women's basketball is now 3-1 to the start of the season. Next up is a road game against NCAA DIII Grinnell College on Sunday, November 19th starting at 2 pm.
