Waldorf Falls Just Short in 78-71 Loss to Morningside in GPAC Showdown
Forest City, IA- In a thrilling GPAC showdown, the Waldorf University women's basketball team fought valiantly but came up just short, falling 78-71 to Morningside University. The game, filled with intensity, saw both teams exchange leads throughout, but the Warriors could not hold on in the final moments.
Waldorf's Brooke Dial was electric, leading her team with 25 points and 5 assists. Dial was particularly lethal from beyond the arc, knocking down 6 of her 8 three-point attempts, showcasing her sharpshooting ability. Alongside her, Myia Ruzek was instrumental in the offense, contributing 19 points, 7 rebounds, and another impressive 5-7 shooting performance from deep. Alyah Abrahamson added 10 points and 7 rebounds, providing an energy spark for the Warriors.
Despite the performances from Waldorf, Morningside's offense proved too much to overcome. Alexis Spier paced the Mustangs with 24 points, including some clutch shots in the closing minutes, while Lily Vollertsen chipped in with 13 points to help seal the win for Morningside.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from the tip-off, with both teams battling through physical defense and fast-paced offense. Waldorf stayed within striking distance throughout, but Morningside's ability to execute in the final minutes allowed them to maintain the slight edge.
Waldorf Women's Basketball Head Coach Shawn Chaffin was proud of his team's effort tonight "I was really proud of how we battled. We answered their runs time and time again and shot the ball really well. We played unselfish basketball but in the end dropped a game to a really good, national caliber team," Chaffin said. "We got better tonight and I am really pleased with the progress that our team is making each time we step on the floor."
The Warriors now look forward to their next GPAC matchup versus Northwestern College next Wednesday, December 4th at 6:00pm in the Hanson Fieldhouse. With the performance seen by the Warriors this evening, Waldorf has shown they can hang with some of the best in the conference, and the margin for error is razor-thin in the highly competitive GPAC.
