Defending champions Dordt University overpower Waldorf 96-58
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - The defending national champions Dordt University displayed their championship pedigree in a dominant 96-58 victory over Waldorf University on Wednesday night. The Defenders showed why they remain a powerhouse in NAIA women's basketball with four players finishing in double figures, while Waldorf struggled to keep up with Dordt's fast-paced offense.
Dordt was led by standout Janie VanDonge, who dropped 24 points, while Olivia Harazin contributed 18 points, and Ellie Lema added 15. The trio were instrumental in extending Dordt's early lead and controlling the tempo throughout the game.
For Waldorf, sophomore guard Brooke Dial paced the offense with 12 points, but the Warriors couldn't find the consistency needed to compete with the reigning champions. Myia Ruzek chipped in 9 points and 2 steals, while Edosa Ogbemudia also added 9 points along with 3 blocks. Off the bench, Cloey Dmytruk provided a spark with 9 points, but it wasn't enough to stop Dordt's offensive onslaught.
The game was effectively decided in the first half as Dordt took control early. By halftime, the Defenders had already built a commanding 53-30 lead thanks to their sharp shooting and aggressive defense that stifled Waldorf's offensive flow. Dordt's ability to spread the ball around and force turnovers contributed to their runaway success, as they capitalized on fast breaks and second-chance opportunities.
Despite the lopsided score, Waldorf head coach Shawn Chaffin remained positive and focused on his team's growth. "We knew we were facing one of the best teams in the country tonight," Chaffin said after the game. "We got off to a great start taking care of the ball, getting good shots and hitting them. In the end, we ended up letting them build momentum. They played like the defending champs tonight."
Waldorf's defense had moments of success, forcing Dordt into a few turnovers and creating some fast-break opportunities of their own, but the Defenders' depth and experience proved to be too much to overcome.
Waldorf goes back to the drawing board in preparation for Mount Marty University this Saturday, November 23rd at 2:00pm at home in the Hanson Fieldhouse.
