Warriors Win Close Against Mayville State
MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Waldorf football team was on the road for a conference matchup against Mayville State University. The game came down to the final 12 seconds with the Warriors scoring to win 28-21.
The Warriors scored on their first drive of the game to open the first quarter. Quarterback Jordan Cooper (JR/New Caney, TX) completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Malik Adams (SR/Cedar Rapids, IA). Defense for the Warriors forced the Comets to have to punt on their first drive of the game.
Taye Buchanan (JR/Vernon, AL) rushed for 39 yards on the next drive, but the Warriors could not produce on 4th down. The Comets started the second quarter with possession and scored to tie the game at 7-7.
Cooper rushed for 22 yards to put the Warriors in scoring position. Buchanan rushed for one yard to score a touchdown, moving the score 14-7. Mayville State responded quickly to tie the game at the end of the first half, 14-14.
Javontey Harper (JR/Houston, TX) rushed for two yards for a touchdown, giving the Warriors a 21-14 lead halfway through the third quarter. Deqwunn McCobb (SR/Bradenton, FL) had a sack for a loss of six yards against the Comets to close out the third quarter, forcing Mayville State to punt.
Isaac Burgett (SO/Emmons, MN) had a 43-yard punt to start the fourth quarter that was down at Mayville's two-yard line. The Warriors defense was able to force the Comets to have to punt. Then the Comets forced and recovered a fumble from the Warriors, putting them in a good position to score to tie the game. Mayville State ties the game 21-21.
Cooper looked to Sam Huntley (SR/Dania, FL) on Waldorf's last drive of the game. Huntley caught three passes for a combined total of 43 yards to help the Warriors move down the field. Harper rushed for 21 yards to score the game winning touchdown.
Huntley set the all-time program record for receiving yards in today's win against Mayville State. He now has 2,278 yards for his career. 2,251 yards was the prior record that was held by James Loydd from 2010-2013.
McCobb led the defense with eight solo tackles. "Proud of the way our guys finished today! Great conference win on the road," Head Coach Will Finley said. "There was adversity and our guys never panicked."
The Warriors are now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in NSAA conference play. Next up is another road game against (RV)Dickinson State University on Saturday, October 15th. Kickoff is at 2PM.
